The Art Community’s Response to the UK riots

This is a very short press release to publicise a forthcoming art exhibition in Cambridge; the proceeds of which will help any families that are evicted by the Condem government:

The artistic community in Cambridge was greatly saddened by the events in London and around the country last week. We were all even more saddened by the kneejerk response of the politicians and believe an artistic intervention is needed. The Cambridge Stuckist Dev Udaiyan (aka me) has sold his painting: “PC Blakelock Chop Chop Chop” to a prominent collector in the last few days due to the publicity that the riots garnered around the world. The painting can be seen here

and on the Saatchi site:

http://www.saatchionline.com/art/Unknown-PC-Blakelock-Chop-Chop-Chop/53206/943175/view

and here

http://www.udaiyan.com/enemies.html

The proceeds from the sale of the painting has been ploughed into organising an exhibition next year at Makers Gallery in Cambridge to raise money for any families threatened or evicted by the Condem government. We believe that an artistic response would be best served to bring people together and so would like to publicise this event to gather as many like minded artists around the world that believe in peace and compassion. If any artists/collectors or the general public agree with our compassionate stance they can email me: Dev Udaiyan at

dudaiyan@nofear.org

Now I haven’t exactly decided how to distribute the money that will be raised. The gallery itself will take 25-30% of any sales. I also need some funds for all the work/time/materials for the show, so I could split it like this: 30% Gallery, and then split the proceeds 50-50% between myself and any families that have been evicted. Or, I could have an auction and have a small reserve amount for me and the rest/profits to be paid to any deserving family. Let me know your suggestions readers. The show will be planned next year so there is plenty of time to tweak the details. I am expecting to raise the usual amount of money for 10-20 paintings i.e. £10,000-£20,000 ish.

Fabtual Art - new redefinition

I have decided to reformulate what my art is about. Here is a short write-up. Let me know what you think :
My art is figurative, conceptual and abstract – i.e. it is Fabtual and I am an exponent of Fabtualism. My main role is a facilitator between the philosophical works of Deleuze and Guattari, semiotic theory, the bridge between syllogistic logic and symbolic logic and modality as per the self defined axioms of my own artistic confines. So in other words I am a bridge, ‘a neutral’ between syllogisms and symbolisms, between vernacular art and conceptual art (as practised by Sol de Witt, On Kawara and Joseph Kosuth in the late 60-70s). I am currently extending this bridge to capture the theorems outlined by Edgeworth Johnstone’s and Charles Thomson’s figurative paintings. So in other words, you can refer to me as 'The Neutralist' or my art as Neutralic in nature. Coupled with these various dyadic or binary relations, the media I use also has a dualistic/multiplistic nature. I used to be a pure oil painter but I am shifting my technique and consciousness in parallel with the theorems that I am engaging in on a daily basis. I am mixing digital art, traditional art, oil/acrylic/pigment painting and modern curatorial and archival practise to disseminate a series of dualisms or neutral standpoints that I am attempting to question. So Neutralic Tradigitalism could be a word you'll be hearing in the near future... maybe?

Also, now that we are on the subject of media and ideas; in order to aid me in this study I am appropriating the motif of “Jones” (Jonathan Jones to be precise) as an indicator of ‘equivalence’. Or to maybe put it another way, I am exploring a visual take on bibliometrics to trace inter-relationships between images, theorems, citations and content. I am literally just in the process of shifting my analysis from semiotics (though not entirely), to try to link the concepts of reflexivity and transitivity in relation to some artistic equivalence relations that I am currently grappling with. One could say that these are quite exciting times on Planet Udaiyan (not to sound too flippant about this).

Painting Commission in Rosalie Nebraska

So before I start my blog proper, I’ll just tell you about my last art trip two months back. I got a phone call (yep the old fashioned means of telecommunication) from Gidion Gans (whom I shall refer to as an acquaintance and part time art collector/critic...) Anyway, Gans told me that he’d heard about a nifty new collector going by the name of James Sublet who had holed himself in the town of Rosalie in Thurston County in Nebraska. Sublet was interested in figurative paintings (‘highlighting the left field in the Mid West’ – his words not mine); and came to my attention via the www.stuckism.com website.  He wanted me to do a commissioned piece; painting a few of his friends and colleagues which he’d then display at his gallery/home on Washusha Street. So, I basically had to fly out there and do a sitting for a few weeks while I painted his art associates. Here are a couple of examples below:

Master Troy Landers. This is a portrait of Troy Landers, an ex resident of Omaha and now a free agent travelling the world at large. Troy had been travelling around America for the last 3 years, joining the circus and becoming one of the carnival peoples: ‘in order to expose and delineate his own particular brand of battle rap and poetry’. James Sublet became interested in his particular brand of underground poetry and was now commissioning Troy to pen some work concerning Rosalie’s immediate and past history. I painted this portrait in two sittings using minimal strokes and heavy primed rough canvas paper.

Master Ronnie Dolejs. Ronnie was an old friend of Clifford Wheatley of Norfolk Nebraska, who was a business partner of James Sublet. In fact Dolejs was only introduced to James a couple of years ago so was a relatively new friend. Dolejs was now acting as Sublet’s chauffeur and general go between and he also ran a gaming arcade in the basement of a property in Columbia Street. As before I painted this portrait in three sittings using minimal strokes and heavy primed rough canvas paper.

Anyway, hope you like the work. You can seem them at James Sublets gallery/art space in Rosalie.

Formation of the Juett foundation

Ok, following on from the initial post and slightly off tack from it all. I was very disappointed about the not guilty verdict concerning the murder of the great anti-capitalist campaigner Tyler Juett. Here is what I wrote on another blog site that was taken down two years ago:

It was with absolute horror and dismay that the Cambridge Stuckists heard about the death of the Bulwell Solja Tyler Juett - killed for stealing a loaf of bread in a modern day take on Les Miserables!
We are living in a society where the dispossessed can be killed with such impunity by the so called mortgaged "possessed". This disgrace can no longer be permitted or allowed to permeate into humanity's consciousness!
We at the Cambridge Stuckists and Nofear say: NO MORE ! No more shall the weak and disadvantaged be crushed by middle England. No more shall the capitalist fools strangle the downtrodden! And no more shall the artistic community be silent at such atrocities in our midst!
I have dedicated two paintings to the eternal soul that is Tyler Juett. The first is a piece entitled: Bulwell Solja - for he is indeed at the vanguard of the anti-capitalist and anti-globalisation movement. He represents the future, the past and the present. And thus I used the medium of charcoal on canvas - for only THAT medium can capture the prehistory of man and subsequently the future for all mankind.

The second painting, I simply call: Tyler Juett. This is an oil on canvas piece - painted in reds and blacks... a heartfelt attempt by me to reach out and glimpse the anguish and sacrifice of Tyler - so that all mankind can stop and think for a second - on what we have become and where we are headed!

D. Udaiyan 2009

Now in 2011 we have had two years to dwell upon this and I welcome any posts in response to the statement above. Two years ago I received extremely vitriolic, hurtful emails and counter post about my message of peace and understanding. Now that we have had the passage of time to ponder these ideas and ideals let us meditate for a short while on the imagery of Tyler and the loss to humanity.
I and five other friends/associates and artists have decided to setup a Juett foundation for the Protection Against the Ravages of Global Capitalism: PARGC. I sold the two paintings above to my collectors in India and managed to raise £15,000 and this will be used as the starting point or root of the foundation. Due to the success of the show a new work was created entitled Bulwell Solja Redux:

More works concerning capitalism and the iconography of Tyler will be forthcoming in the next few years by myself and the other artists in the Joseph Abrams collective.

Welcome and merry Artmas

Greetings fellow art lovers (and I mean the real art lovers out there – the ones that go to that grimy gallery/abandoned space on Frostic walk, or the open buy-ins and art swaps on Puma Ct. Greetings and merry Artmas to you all! This is my first post on my newly formed blog where I will be revealing the real art world... and I’m not talking about the usual dweebs that the critics go on about. I’m going to go and see the real underground art, the cash in hand impresarios (yes we do all need to live and more importantly  drink), the art swap gurus, the collective art protagonists and the inevitable haters out there. I’ve been on the scene for a while and couldn’t find any internet presence about it so – here it is. I’ll also respect anyone’s privacy so if I do a post about you please feel free to pour some Romanee Conti on my head the next time we meet up . All the best now.
